Plexiglass (Polymethyl methacrylate) is a popular name, abbreviated as PMMA. The chemical name of this polymer transparent material is polymethyl methacrylate, which is a polymer compound formed by the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. It is an important thermoplastic that was developed earlier. Plexiglass is divided into four types: colorless and transparent, colored and transparent, pearlescent, and embossed plexiglass. Plexiglass is commonly known as acrylic, Zhongxuan acrylic, and acrylic. Plexiglass can be divided into four types according to the shape:

1. Colorless transparent plexiglass

The most common and most used plexiglass material.

2. Colored transparent plexiglass

Colored plexiglass is divided into three types: transparent colored, translucent colored, and opaque colored. The chandelier made of it is exquisitely carved and crystal clear. Translucent plexiglass is similar to frosted glass, with soft reflection. 3. Pearlescent plexiglass

It is made by adding pearl powder or phosphor powder to ordinary plexiglass. This kind of plexiglass has bright color and high surface finish. After the outer form is hot-pressed by the mold, even if it is ground and polished, it still maintains the embossed pattern, forming a unique artistic effect. It can be used to make characters, animal shapes, trademarks, decorations and publicity exhibition materials.

4. Embossed plexiglass

It is divided into transparent, translucent, colorless, brittle and easy to break. It is used in indoor doors and windows and other decorations. It has the characteristics of light transmission but not shape. It is usually used in indoor partitions or doors and windows that separate indoors.

①High transparency. Plexiglass is an excellent polymer transparent material with a light transmittance of 92%, which is higher than that of glass. The tube of the sun lamp, known as the artificial little sun, is made of quartz, because quartz can completely transmit ultraviolet rays. Ordinary glass can only transmit 0.6% of ultraviolet rays, but plexiglass can transmit 73%.

②High mechanical strength. The relative molecular mass of plexiglass is about 2 million. It is a long-chain polymer compound, and the chain forming the molecule is very soft. Therefore, the strength of plexiglass is relatively high, and its tensile and impact resistance are 7- 18 times. There is a kind of plexiglass that has been heated and stretched, in which the molecular segments are arranged in a very orderly manner, so that the toughness of the material is significantly improved. Nails are used in this plexiglass, and even if the nails penetrate, the plexiglass will not crack. This kind of plexiglass is also not broken into pieces after being penetrated by a bullet. Therefore, stretched plexiglass can be used as bulletproof glass and also as canopy on military aircraft.

③Light weight. The density of plexiglass is 1.18g/cm3; the same size material, its weight is only half of ordinary glass, 43% of metal aluminum (belonging to light metal).

④Easy to process. Plexiglass can not only be cut with a lathe and drilled with a drilling machine, but also can be bonded into various shapes of appliances with acetone, chloroform, etc., and can also be processed into plastic molding methods such as blow molding, injection, and extrusion.
