PEI is an amorphous plastic. It is an amorphous high-performance polymer, which is extruded from engineering plastics made of amorphous PEI (polyetherimide) at high temperature by an extruder. The commonly used PEI board is the raw material of American GE (trade name Ultem)

PEI has the best high temperature resistance and dimensional stability, as well as chemical resistance, flame retardant, electrical properties, high strength, high rigidity, etc. Not only high mechanical performance, but also excellent thermal and chemical stability (continuous use temperature of about 170 ℃), as well as high dimensional stability and creep strength. It has high strength, high rigidity, wear resistance and dimensional stability at high temperature. Without adding any additives, it has inherent flame retardancy and low smoke, the oxygen index is 47%, and the combustion grade is UL94-V-0.

The density of PEI sheet is 1.28~1.42g/cm3, the glass transition temperature is 215℃, and the heat distortion temperature is 198~208℃. PEI has excellent mechanical strength, electrical insulation properties, radiation resistance, high and low temperature resistance, fatigue resistance and molding processability; adding glass fiber, carbon fiber or other fillers can achieve the purpose of reinforcement and modification. It is unique in its thermoplastics. Torsional strength, making it an inexpensive alternative to small steel cut parts

PEI sheet has excellent comprehensive balance performance, and is effectively used in electronics, automobiles, motors, aviation and other industrial sectors, and is used as a metal substitute for traditional products and cultural daily necessities. Commonly used in microtools/catering industry, analytical instrumentation, medical equipment, telecommunications, molded interconnects (MTD), automotive lighting, aircraft interior components, HVAC/fluid handling, etc.

PEI has excellent hydrolysis resistance, so it is used as handles, trays, jigs, prosthetics, medical lamp reflectors and dental appliances for medical surgical instruments.

 

Status: There are no domestic manufacturers of PEI sheets, and they mainly rely on imports. Origin are Germany, the United States, Japan and other places.

Important hint:

  PEI sheet, an amorphous thermoplastic, is very sensitive to stress embrittlement when in contact with polar organic solvents such as ethanol. The working environment is completely harmless to unstressed parts, but can cause stress embrittlement to parts with high stress. Not only the stress generated by the external load, but also the internal stress generated during the machining process and the production process of the profile will have a great effect on the stress embrittlement phenomenon. The risk of stress embrittlement is therefore minimized by applying some form of heat treatment to stress relief of machined parts. Oil-based coolants should not be used when machining these amorphous thermoplastics, as they appear to increase environmental stress embrittlement. For these materials, the best coolant is pure water or compressed air.
In view of the poor wear resistance and high friction coefficient of PEI plate, it is not recommended to be used in occasions with friction or wear resistance requirements
